Where are you currently serving in the community, and what has it taught you as a leader?
I just became the principal at a local middle school. Before that, I was the principal at an elementary school. My experiences serving in the schools in Fort Wayne have changed my life and given me clarity on the impact God can have if we serve with passion and understand that the best way to lead is to empower those you serve. I have been able to watch God work in profound ways for the children in this community!
I serve in teaching a youth bible study for those in a county detention program. It’s incredibly humbling to hear their stories and struggles, yet so, so rewarding when, often for the first time in their lives, they start to accept God’s love for them.
There is a tremendous need in our community not just for physical essentials, but also loving people where they are. When you take the time to listen to people, you start to understand adversity they’ve faced that we don’t otherwise notice or comprehend when we stay “busy” going about our normal lives.
I have served at The Rescue Mission for several years and now serving at our local Boys and Girls Clubs. Serving in my own leadership roles as well as a volunteering has taught me that showing up matters. Sometimes it’s simmply your presence, a smile, meeting an indiviual where they are at and just being alongside them matters. It is the small consistant actions that make big impact. Sometimes individuals don’t need an answer, or a solution, they just need companionship and care. Small consistant presence can break down barriers and soften hearts.
